This Week at the Library - February 6th- 12th, 2022

February has arrived reminding us that it is still winter. It was quite a challenge getting shoveled both at home and at the library and we still have the mailboxes to contend with… Here’s to the week ahead with temperatures above 20 degrees, winds below 10 mph, a few days without precipitation and many days with sunshine. We have a lot happening at the library and we want everyone able to get here!!

Regular Hours – Monday 10 – 1, Wednesday 12 – 4, and Saturday 10 -1

All Week – We are clearing out the attic in preparation for our Button Up (energy saving) Project which will take place the week of February 21st. Everything needs to come out of the attic so that the present insulation can be removed, the leaks all plugged up, and a new level of insulation put in… Last week our “Monday Dads” brought down all the shelving and we plan to put them to work again this week. And we welcome all of you to come help!!!

All Week – A Valentine Story Walk – Ring in Valentine’s Day with Love from the Crayons featuring everyone’s favorite coloring crew, the perfect story for Valentine’s Day or any day of the year! Stop in, head downstairs, and enjoy reading this story as you walk around Merrill Hall. Follow the red arrows …fun for the whole family.

All Week - It’s the last week to make your special someone a Valentine card. We have all the materials and just need you!

Monday, February 7th at 10 – Family Fun for the little ones and their families – Come join us for a few planned activities and some spontaneous play inside and out… we have great snow piles! Please park behind the library.

Thursday, February 10th 1 – 3 – We will be working on the historical resources housed in the library. This week we will be focusing on the 2021 memorabilia, the Old Home Day books and labeling the family genealogy binders. Do you enjoy cutting and pasting?? If so, stop by!

Black History Month –Governor Chris Sununu has proclaimed February as Black History Month in the State of New Hampshire. We’ve gathered books and inspiring quotes as we honor our Black population this month… How rich our country is with the contributions made by our Black singers, actors, sports players, educators, writers, politicians and nice, thoughtful people. We thank you all!

Doiron, Paul – Dead by Dawn (2021) – Life is never dull for Maine Game Warden, Mike Bowditch… this next episode includes a dark winter road, a crash into a frozen river, being trapped under the ice, being pursued by snowmobiles…. All this because he is investigating a murder…. makes me appreciate our Fish and Game officers! (Fiction)

Hayes-McCoy, Felicity – The Month of Borrowed Dreams (2018) – At last our Finfarran series is up to date with the arrival of this novel, #4 in the series and it has been quite the search. I am looking forward to a return to the Finfarran Peninsula on Ireland’s west coast and a visit with the Lissbeg librarian, Hanna Casey but I will probably go back and read the first three again… loved them! (Fiction)

Clinton, Hillary Rodham and Clinton, Chelsea – The Book of Gutsy Women, Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience (2019)  - As we all know, ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and girls remains unfinished business. The women featured in this book have had the courage to stand up to the status quo, ask hard questions, and bring about change. Each story in inspiring. (Nonfiction – Body and Soul/Resilience)

Chapman, Walker – The Loneliest Continent, The Story of Antarctic Discovery (1964)  - This book was recently donated to the library and due to our lack of books about Antarctica, we decided to add it to our collection. This book starts back before it was even known that there was a continent… as early explorers sailed nearer all they saw was fog….an interesting read. (Nonfiction – Places/Antarctica)

Rose, Sarah – D-Day Girls, The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win World War II – (2019) – In 1942, the Allies were losing, and it was time for Winston Churchill and the secret agency, SOE (Special Operations Executive) to do something unprecedented, recruit women. Thirty-nine women answered the call and left their lives and families to become saboteurs in France and help lay the plans for the D Day invasion… another inspiring read. (Nonfiction – Times/WWII)

With a visit to the library and it promises to be a busy week with Valentine’s Day just around the corner and the start of our Button Up Project coming closer. Yes, there is lots to see and do at our library!

Have a wonderful heart-filled week.... Susan and the Library Ladies
