This Week at the Library... November 18th 2020

The countdown is on… one more week until Thanksgiving! And what a different one it will be for many of us without those we love best sharing the day with us. Being the hardy New Englanders we are, we surely will all make the best of the day. We two have been invited to serve as “friends” and “substitute grandparents” with a favorite local family and feel very blessed. We, at the library, count all of you as part of our blessings and wish you the very best.

The Pandemic continues… Our little library is now open on Wednesdays (1-5, seniors 1-2) and Saturdays (10-12) and you do not need an appointment. We ask that you wear your mask, use the sanitizer, and keep your distance. We are also continuing our “porch side” pick ups… return your bag and we will refill it! You are also welcome to email us with your requests… jkelso@rumneylibrary.org for children’s materials, and sturbyne@rumneylibrary.org for everything else.

New from John Grisham… A Time for Mercy (2020)…

Jake Brigance, the hero from A Time to Kill and Sycamore Row, is back in Clanton, Mississippi, 1990. Jake has been appointed attorney for a sixteen year old boy accused of murdering the local deputy. Get ready for courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue and numerous plot twists…

New from Yaa Gyasi… Transcendent Kingdom (2020)… Many of you enjoyed Ms Gyasi’s earlier book, Homecoming. This latest offering is about a Ghanaian family living in our south as they deal with race in America and reckon spiritually and intellectually with a legacy of unmanageable loss… exquisitely written.

New to us… Wilderness, The Gateway to the Soul, Spiritual Enlightenment Through Wilderness by Scott Stillman (2018)… Mr. Stillman reminds us that there are still unspoiled, untamed places around us… places that can help us see who we truly are. And how fortunate we all are to live where we do!

Wishing you all a good week… See you at the Library! Susan and the Ladies

This Week at the Library - November 11th - 14th 2020

November 11 we celebrate Veterans Day as we honor our military veterans. It coincides with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the end of WWI, which formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Our flag will be out honoring those who served and we will be open from 1 until 5 that day.

Just a reminder, you do not need an appointment. We are counting noses and monitoring our numbers. You may be asked to wait outside for a moment. Porch-side pickup is also continuing... return your bag and we will refill it! Include a note if there is a particular book you are looking for.

Agatha Christie Mysteries Update... We had two enthusiastic messages from patrons who checked out Ms Christie books this past week. I am remembering that my dear aunts introduced me to Miss Marple when I was a middle schooler! We still have several to choose from so stop in or place a request.

Special Message for our YA readers and especially EN and NR... We have added #7 Monster, #8 Villain, and #9 Hero to our GONE saga...

Back to the Classics... When asked if there are any classic novels that he has only recently read, a NY Times reader shared the following: “My son, who is a voracious reader, had told me how much he liked John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. I tried it and was captivated. It really is the Great American Novel, beginning on the East Coast and moving to the West, spanning America’s rise from an agricultural nation to an industrial powerhouse.” We have the book waiting for you as well as Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and The Winter of Our Discontent.

See you at the library... Wednesdays 1 – 5 and Saturdays 10 - 12

This Week at the Library - November 4 - 7 2020

This Week at the Library... November 4-7 2020

Halloween has come and gone... fun to see our little goblins having a good time....proud of the Moms and Dads who kept everyone safe. As we welcome November, we are thankful for all that we have... in spite of difficult times we are so fortunate to be living here in Rumney.

We enjoyed seeing the folks who stopped by this past week. Just a reminder, you do not need an appointment. We are counting noses and monitoring our numbers. You may be asked to wait outside for a moment. Porch-side pickup is also continuing... return your bag and we will refill it! Include a note if there is a particular book you are looking for.

Agatha Christie Mysteries... This might be the perfect time to lose yourself in one of Ms Christie’s time proven ‘who dun its’! Thanks to a very special patron we have oodles of new titles on our shelves.

Our Travel the World display has attracted quite a bit of attention. Each time I fall into a book about Provence or Tuscany I am ready to go.... the views, the villages, the food! We also have books and cds to help you learn French and Italian. Personally the app Duolingo is a favorite of mine and it’s free!

I am halfway through The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult... I am learning a lot about Egyptology, pyramids, and rituals of death and finding it all very fascinating...it just takes a little longer to take it all in. It is good and I will try to be done later in the week.

This will be a week for us to catch up here at the library... the type of week we need every now and then. Hope to see you and we always welcome your suggestions!
