2022 4 17-23 - New Ecology Books

This week, as we celebrate Earth Day 2022, we are excited to present
a new collection of ecology books thanks to a very generous patron.
These new books, along with a variety of programs we have planned,
will help the residents of Rumney better understand
what is happening to our climate and what we can do
to take better care of our Earth.
Join us as we celebrate Earth Day every day!

Doerr, John – Speed and Scale, an Action Plan for Solving Our Climate Crisis Now (2021) – In 2006, John Doerr was moved by Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and a challenge from his teenage daughter: “Dad, your generation created this problem. You better fix it.” Since then Doerr has searched for solutions to this existential problem – as an investor, an advocate, and a philanthropist.

Haskell, David George – The Songs of Trees (2017) – A love song to trees, an exploration of their biology and a philosophical analysis of the role they play in our world….a great read for those wanting to be swept away to new locations while gaining a greater appreciation for the impact a single tree can have.

Hayhoe, Katherine – Saving Us, a Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World (2021) – Over the past fifteen years, Ms Hayhoe has found that the most important thing we can do to address climate change is to talk about it – and she wants to teach you how. Ms Hayhoe argues that when it comes to changing hearts and minds, facts are only one part of the equation. We need to find shared values to call for collective action.

Kimmerer, Robin Wall – Braiding Sweetgrass, Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants (2020) – Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist and as a woman, Ms Kimmerer shows how other living beings offer us gifts and lessons…. The awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world.

Lockwood, Devi – 1001 Voices on Climate Change, Everyday Stories of Flood, Fire, Drought, and Displacement from Around the World (2021) – Ms Lockwood biked around the world collecting personal stories about how flood, fire, drought, and rising seas are changing communities. This book is a hopeful global listening tour for climate change, channeling the urgency of those who have already glimpsed the future to help us avoid the worst.

Rush, Elizabeth – Rising, Dispatches from the New American Shore (2018)Rising is both a highly original work of reportage and a haunting meditation on how to let go of the places we love. With every passing day and every record-breaking hurricane, it grows clearer that climate change is neither imagined nor distant – the rising seas are transforming the coastline of the United States.

Tickell, Josh – Kiss the Ground, How the Food You Eat Can Reverse Climate Change, Heal Your Body & Ultimately Save Our World (2017) – Our food choices not only impact our personal health, but the health of the world we all live in. The author paints a hopeful and achievable picture of a way of growing food that makes our soil healthier, makes us healthier, and ultimately could make our climate healthier too.

Douglas, Paul – A Kid’s Guide to Saving the Planet, It’s Not Hopeless and We’re Not Helpless (2022) – In this inspiring, informative book, the author clearly and thoughtfully presents the daunting problems of climate change, and he offers realistic solutions (including some that are already working!) and actions that kids can participate in now.

Lurro – Climate Change, Activity Book for Kids – 2021 – This book is a collection of various games for children on the theme of climate change. It will help them learn about our environment, pollution, ecology and the vocabulary associated with these topics.

Wright, Maureen – Earth Day, Birthday! (2012) – A fun picture book for the younger set – It’s April 22nd and everyone in the jungle is celebrating Earth Day with a day full of planned ecological events. What do they have planned?

Stop by and take a look!!
And let us know if you have suggestions of items to add
to our collection.

April for rainbows and April for showers,
April for a bright hint of lovely May flowers.
April for nonsense and April for play,
Best of all times is a real April Day!

Welcome to April! It will be a busy month here at the library with all sorts of special things and events to celebrate. Coming up this month we have National Library Week, Poetry Month, Animals - Animals - Animals, and, of course Earth Day.  Get ready to get involved! This week we start with National Library Week!

The theme this year, “Connect with Your Library”, promotes the idea that
libraries are places to get connected to technology by using broadband,
computers, and other resources. Most importantly libraries
connect us to each other.
And we have lots of ideas for getting you connected!

You are invited to:

Sign up for your very own library card!
Our library cards give you borrowing priviledges for three years so
it might be a good time to renew an older card as well.
We offer DVDs, audio books, public computers, Wi-Fi, a place to relax
and read, and a chance to meet your neighbors.
In addition, we have librarians to assist you and a ton of books!

Sign up for Libby and start downloading all sorts of
eBooks, audio books, and magazines in the
comfort of your home. Your passcode will allow you to
activate this service 24/7! You will never be without a good read!

Help decorate our "We Love Our Library" tree. We are looking for photos of YOU reading, some neat library/book quotes, and anything else you might have
to make our tree festive. The little ones eyes just light up when they enter our lobby and settle up close with a favorite read!

Jane has set out this new collection of "library" books
for the younger set...  but Richard Wright and the Library Card
will be enjoyed by all ages!

This collection offers quite a variety... from a young librarian with her first job,
to an Agatha Christie mystery, to finding love...

Read a book about a librarian!!!
If you are still reading, we know that you like a good book. We may also venture a guess that one of your favorite places to be is a library. This week we have a list of books featuring librarians and libraries... perfect for bibliophiles!
