My memories of August in years past were endless hot days, my dad taking all the neighborhood kids swimming when he got home from work, and long evenings of “Giant Steps” and “Red Light” on the lawn as our parents sipped iced tea on the porch. May we all enjoy the next several weeks before getting back into our fall schedules.

This past month has been busy with avid readers and the voices of our ‘Summer Readers’. Our five-week program was well attended with Jane offering new challenges and activities each week. Our best “guessers” ended up being Isla and Emma! Congratulations girls on coming closest in our Guessing Jar challenge.

Our final event, this past Saturday, was a lot of fun…. Painting the library windows (It will wash off!), enjoying popsicles, appreciating our garden, and loading library bags with lots of books for the week ahead. A fun finale!

A big thank you to all who participated in our summer reading activities. We invite you all to stop by this week and select a FREE book to take home!

And, we thank Jane for all the planning and creating to make it fun for our families.

Something new this summer was our ‘Book Mobile” that visited the Rumney School each Monday afternoon. We would arrive with crates of books hand-picked for the enjoyment of the 5th – 8th graders attending the school summer program. The students would select their books and immediately start to read as we packed up to return to the library. Thank you, Maggie Demler, for working with me each week!

It was a pleasure to welcome Katy Gautsch to our library staff. Katy comes to us loaded with all the skills and enthusiasm needed to help our library grow. She has enjoyed meeting and serving our patrons this past month and is taking quite an interest in our “Teen Room”.

Attention Teens…. Next time you are in, be sure to check our growing Teen and Young Adult sections. We have some wonderful new books in addition to some cozy favorites. We have added non-fiction books as well to meet your school reading requirements. We will be happy to give you a tour.

Wednesday, August 2nd from 1 until 3 - Teen Art at the Library – Everyone had such a good time at our first session that we have decided to do it again! In addition, our teens have been invited to display their art at the upcoming Art Walk here in Rumney on August 20th.

Teens and Tweens are invited to participate this week – Supplies and good company will be provided. Do bring your creative juices!

Saturday, August 5th at 1 - Sewing Workshop for ages 7 and up… This is a new idea, and we are anxious to know who might be interested. Materials will be prepared in advance so it is important that you email Jane if you would like to reserve a space - SPACE WILL LIMITED

Saturday, August 12th Old Home Day - We will be hosting our Annual Old Home Day Book Sale from 9 until noon. We will have a lot of fiction (adult and young adult), non-fiction, and books for children. Payment is by donation. We hope that you will come by, look at what we have to offer, and find something you like. Book donations may be left by the back door this week and next.

In addition, the library will open after the parade and remain open until two. Stop by and say hello. We will set out scrapbooks to peruse and offer a cup of lemonade!

Sunday, August 20th 1 until 4 – Rumney Art Walk 2023 – A special day to enjoy the artistic talent of our lovely community. You are invited to park behind the library and enjoy exhibits at the Rumney Historical Museum, the Byron G Merrill Library, and follow the free self-guided tour of local studios, galleries, and shops in the area.

At the library we will display works by our teens as well as Kim Davis and Corey Grogan.
