October 2022

Join us throughout the month of October as we host our very first Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee with fun activities continuing all month long starting with cider and doughnuts and ending with a Halloween Parade around the Common for our little gremlins on October 31st. Be sure to check in regularly as we update the plans.

First up, this coming Saturday (October 8th from 10:30 – 11:30) as we begin our festive month, we will be serving cider and doughnuts in front of the library and will encourage you to step inside and sign up for a library card as well as stock up with some good reads! An Open House, bring a friend!

Each Saturday morning (October 15th, 22nd, and 29th at 10:30), Jane will be hosting a fun time for our “Junior Readers” (Grades 1 – 6) with special activities planned around the following themes….. Colorful Fall Leaves, It’s Apple Season, and Get Ready for Halloween!

Our Monday Morning Family Get-togethers continue each week for the younger set and includes story time, crafts, yoga, and playtime… an opportunity for a fun morning and for adults and children to make new friends. This coming Monday (October 10th at 10:15) the craft following story time will be painting leaves so wear your painting clothes! And on October 31st, we invite you to arrive in your Halloween costume ready for a parade around the Common, some fun games and a good time!

Just added to our collection…

Breaking Time by Sasha Alsberg… One reviewer says “Perfect for fans of Outlander…A lush story of star crossed lovers and time traveling assassins.”

Rumney Common by former Rumney resident Christopher Whitcomb…Murder, intrigue, and eccentric townspeople. Things in Rumney are just not what they seem!

Pale Horse, Pale Rider by Katherine Anne Porter… First published in 1939, these three award-winning short stories will take you back to earlier times.

Northeast Medicinal Plants by Liz Neves will help you to identify, harvest, and use 111 wild herbs for health and wellness that are found in New England.

Putin by Philip Short… A well-documented and  up-to-date biography of Vladimir Putin woven into the saga of Russia over the past sixty years.

Skip over to The Kids’ Page for a list of new tiles for the younger set.

I recently discovered Joyce Maynard and am thoroughly enjoying her writing style. Her most recent book, Count the Ways (2021) tells the story of a family from the early days of young marriage to parenthood, divorce, and the costly aftermath that ripples through all their lives all in a beautiful New Hampshire setting. The chapters are the “right” length that as you finish one you are ready to go right on to the next… a good read! We’ve added an earlier Maynard novel The Good Daughters (2010) which I also enjoyed very much....Trying to decide what to order next!!

Don't forget that we offer “Interlibrary Loans” – if we do not have the book you are looking for, we will make every effort to borrow it from another NH library. We also offer access to NH Downloadable Books where you can download eBooks, audio books, and even magazines anytime right from your home. Need a passcode?? Contact Jane. We still offer my porch for pick up and drop off for your convenience.

Sending you all good wishes for a Happy October!
