Our holiday-themed fiction for young and old are on display and will keep those visions of sugarplum fairies dancing in your head. We invite you to stop in, pick up a festive read and start your holiday celebration.
Mondays 10 -1, Wednesdays 12 – 4, and Saturdays 10 -1
We know that these
hours do not work for everyone so we do what we can to keep our library
services going 24/7. “Porch side” service continues – please email us your list
and we will set your books out on my porch at 36 Buffalo Road and you can pick
them up at your convenience. Books can also be returned to the porch at any
time. Downloadable books are available 24/7… Do you have your passcode? If not,
contact Jane!
Monday,
December 6th – 10 til 12 is Family Fun Time!
New Request…During
this cold, messy season, we ask that you park behind the library and enter
through the rear door. We have placed chairs and trays just inside the door so
that you may leave your boots before you head downstairs… you might want to
bring slippers. If you are returning books, please leave your book bag on the
“up” stairs as you head downstairs to remove all your coats etc. This will give
everyone a chance to visit and plan the morning’s activities.
All This Week
(during Open Hours) – Christmas Craft
This activity will
be fun for all ages… Jane has set out a bunch of glittery supplies and will
encourage you to put your creative juices to work and make a holiday card for
someone special. After all, it is the season!
All This Week
(during Open Hours) – A Holiday Guessing Jar!
Each library visit
entitles you to make a guess as how many fun do-dads are in the Guessing Jar… Whoever
is closest will win a prize.
All This Week (during Open Hours) - Our Book Sale
Our patrons have generously donated a lot of good reads to our Library Book Sale. Do you have readers on your Christmas gift list? We might just have the perfect gift to go under your tree. Plus...your donation will help finance our "Button Up for Winter" project.
Coming up soon
- Tuesday, December 14th at 7 – a “live” presentation!
A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas will be read by our friend and neighbor, John Allen, and is an annual event we all look forward to attending. Space is limited downstairs in Merrill Hall but we will do our best to accommodate everyone. We will be happy to reserve a “well spaced’ seat for you.
Holiday Inspiration…
Throughout
December we spend much time making presents and decorations or cooking our
favorite recipes. We welcome back our time-honored rituals such as finding and
decorating the perfect tree. But it can also be fun to add some new ideas to
the mix and we have all sorts of inspiration to spur you on. Our large round
table is covered with books and magazines filled with all sorts of ideas for
crafting, decorating, cooking, staying sane etc. and they are all available for
you to borrow!

Adult
Fiction…
Denton, Lauren
K - The One You’re With (2021)
– tells the story of marriage, choices, and what a good life looks like from a
southern point of view!
Fleet, Rebecca
– The House Swap (2018) – A
house swap becomes the eerie backdrop to a crumbling marriage, a long-buried
affair, and the fatal consequences that unfold – one of those scary stories
that one cannot put down.
Patterson,
James with Nancy Allen – The Jailhouse Lawyer (2021) – A young lawyer takes on the judge who is
destroying her hometown and ends up in jail herself. Sometimes the best education
a lawyer can get is a short stretch of hard time.
Clinton,
Hillary Rodham with Louise Penny – State of Terror (2021) – After a tumultuous period in American
politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and, to everyone’s
surprise, the President of the United States chooses a political enemy for the
vital position of Secretary of State – an utterly compelling international
thriller.
Powers, Richard
– Bewilderment (2021) – From
the author of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Overstory, comes this
new read. Theo Byrne, an astrobiologist, and his nine year old son, Robin,
grieve the loss of Aly, wife and mother and animal-rights activist who died in
an automobile accident. Robin has been acting out and Theo, to avoid
medication, embraces a new therapy developed by his colleague – “searing and
heart breaking, guaranteed to break you and put you back together again”
blending science, emotion, and philosophy.
Non-Fiction
Patchett, Anne – These Precious Days
(2021) – As a writer, Anne Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be.
Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this
truth in these wise essays that delve into her mind and heart. Ms Patchett has
quite a fan base in our library, and I am sure that this offering will be very
much enjoyed.
Woodward, Bob with Robert Costa – Peril (2021) - Woodward and Costa cover the transition from President Donald J Trump to President Joseph R Biden Jr, an ongoing event that we have all witnessed this past year. Two hundred people were interviewed and 6,000 pages of transcripts were compiled to tell us what really happened behind the scenes. Two of our readers found it compelling and could not put the book down.
with a visit to the Library! We are looking forward to a busy week and have a couple of requests for you...
- Help us decorate our tree by sending us the title and author of a book from the library you have read recently… We will add an ornament to our tree with your selection reminding everyone that Rumney Reads!!!
- We are also adding small size school pictures to the tree… We love the children and enjoy seeing their smiling faces adorning our Christmas tree.
That’s it for this week… Enjoy
each day! Susan and the Library Ladies
