This Week at the Library - December 9th, 2020

Our world has changed… at least that is the view from my library window this Sunday morning. Somehow, overnight, everything became white. Winter has arrived and I am definitely looking forward to the Christmas lights tonight in Rumney Village.

The Pandemic continues… Our little library is open on Wednesdays (1-5, seniors 1-2) and Saturdays (10-12) and you do not need an appointment. We ask that you wear your mask, use the sanitizer, and keep your distance. You will notice a few changes when you come in. We ask that you place your returned books on the cart and do self-checkout. We keep trying to make everything even safer for all. We are also continuing our “porch side” pickups… return your bag and we will refill it! You are also welcome to email us with your requests… jkelso@rumneylibrary.org for children’s materials, and sturbyne@rumneylibrary.org for everything else.

BGM Website is up and going!
Go to rumneylibrary.org and take a look. This is a work in progress so it will be constantly changing! At this point the main feature is our blog with the newest post at the top. In the upper right hand corner, you will see Book Lists. Click and you will be able to navigate to our adult fiction and categorized books. Be patient… the lists are long and take a few moments to load. Remember fiction books are in alphabetical order by author’s last name. Categorized books are in order by category. Let us know what you think!

This month we are featuring our December holiday book collection… festive books and movies for all ages…. Nothing new, just our old favorites.

Featured Author – Paulo Coelho
…is a Brazilian novelist perhaps best known for his novel, The Alchemist. He was born into a strict Catholic family and was committed to a mental institution at the age of seventeen when he was unable to conform to his family’s expectations. This was followed by a year in law school, time living as a hippie, and drug use. In 1986, while walking the Road of Santiago de Compostela in Spain he had a spiritual awakening and this was followed by his allegorical novel, The Alchemist, which follows a young shepherd on his journey to Egypt after having a dream of finding treasure there. In Coelho’s new book, The Archer (2020), comes an inspiring story about a young man seeking wisdom from an elder and the practical lessons imparted along the way. The Witch of Portobello, Adultery, The Spy, and Hippie are also available at our library.

New from Michael Connelly… The Law of Innocence (2020)…
Lincoln lawyer, Mickey Haller, is back! On the night he celebrates a big win, Mickey is pulled over by police who find the body of a former client in the trunk of his car. Yikes! We are featuring all six of the Mickey Haller novels in our display area. Pick up where you left off or start a new series!

New from Christopher Paolini… To Sleep in a Sea of Stars (2020)…
Christopher has been a very popular author in our library with his young adult series Inheritance that began with Eragon  in 2002. This is his first adult novel and will certainly appeal to our science fiction fans. Kira Navarez dreamed of life on new worlds and then she awakened to a nightmare. While Kira faces her own horrors, Earth and its colonies stand upon the brink of annihilation and Kira might be humanity’s greatest and final hope.

New Memoir from Katherine E Standefer…
Lightning Flowers, My Journey to Uncover the Cost of Saving a Life (2020) You have heard her interview on NPR and now you can read the book. A medical emergency, an implanted cardiac defibrillator, a painful recovery and enormous debt caused Ms Standefer to weigh the medical decisions made on her behalf. This book takes an interesting and hard look at medical technology, health care, and the cost of saving a life.

Wishing you all a good week… See you at the Library! Susan and the Ladies
