Greetings from Byron G Merrill Library. We have been busy this first part of January
welcoming returning patrons, all with well-wishes and gratitude for our open
hours. Yes, we are open Wednesdays 1-4 and Saturdays 10-12. You
will see our new self-check- out system in place to help provide an easy and
comfortable environment in the library. We also continue with our porch-side
services, Interlibrary Loan, and email requests.
This week we are highlighting new books for middle grade
readers (ages 9-12). We have been cataloging some new graphic fiction and
additions to many our fantasy and adventure series. Here is a sampling of What’s
New:
Graphic Novels
Once
upon a time there was a tiny kingdom called Cornucopia, as rich in happiness as
it was in gold, and famous for its food. But even in this happy kingdom, a
monster lurks. Legend tells of a fearsome creature living far to the north in
the Marshlands... the Ickabog. Some say it's just a myth...A must read!!!
Alfred the Bogler is a man who
catches monsters. As more and more children disappear under mysterious
circumstances, Alfred and his young apprentices find themselves waging an
underground war.
With
beautiful text and illustrations, we learn about the many surprising lessons
animals have to teach us about friendship, compassion, and how to be a
better creature in the world.
Outside
is waiting, the most patient playmate of all. This thought-provoking picture
book underscores our powerful and enduring connection with nature.
This
stunning book is inspired by the thousands of children Sophie Blackall has met during her travels around the world
in support of UNICEF and Save the Children.
A Promised Land, by Barack
Obama
Presidential Memoir of Barack
Obama’s odyssey from earliest political aspirations to 2008 when he was elected
the 44th president of the United States.
This wonderful book highlights a
lifestyle of self-reliance and sustainability. It brings homesteading to
everyday life with instructions for canning, fermenting, beekeeping, raising
chickens and so much more.
What happens when you do the right
thing but it goes all wrong? What does it mean to be a good neighbor? When new
neighbors move in next door to Valerie Alston-Holt, a professor of forestry and
ecology, and begin to cut down all the trees, raze the old house she is
challenged to find anything in common.
A
brilliantly funny novel of questionable behavior, featuring a wealthy
Connecticut divorcée, her college-age daughter, and the famous novelist who is
seduced by them both.
